Digital Media Weekly for May 23, 2023
You know, I know you know, , short-form videos are in!
So in this week’s note to you, my beautiful video creator people, I have some valuable tips and info you can use to leverage video shorts to:
gain more attention to your YouTube channel,
grow channel
subscribers, and
get more views.
Nothing wrong with any of those things, right?
Wyzowl’s annual data shows that73% of consumersprefer to watch short-form videos when learning about a product or service.
So first, a few things to keep in mind for producing better content for short-form videos for your channel.
1- Remember to shoot and think in vertical format! There are plenty of tools to help you create shorts, starting with your cell phone’s video
camera. But whatever your preferred tool, remember to create vertically.
2- Short-form videos, by definition, are video content running a mere five seconds to ninety seconds, maximum. However, my best advice to you is to vary the length of what you create based on the platform and type of video content you are producing. (see 4
below)
Pro Tip: Beware of watermarks when uploading a video from one platform to another. It’s a better idea to upload directly to the platform you are posting to rather than reposting. More than the watermark, the new platform (YouTube, etc.) wants, craves, and rewards content uploaded directly to their channels.
3- Grab attention fast with a compelling visual, audio, story, or whatever, but make it count right off the bat because, well, it’s all very quick to view and consume. Therefore, it’s essential you get immediate notice, right?
(More to help with this coming up…)
Determine Video Length by Platform to Optimize
4- According to
Hootsuite, here is a breakdown of those ideal video lengths to keep in mind for these short-form video platforms:
TikTok: between 11 and 17 seconds
Instagram: between 7 and 15 seconds
YouTube Shorts: between 15
and 60 seconds
Snapchat Spotlight: between 5 and 60 seconds
5- Don’t be afraid to be creative or funny, but most importantly, have a meaningful purpose for the video shorts you create and share. Remember the data shown above, and give people what they want— to learn about a product or service.
Pro Tip: Share other people’s shorts on social, too. Video content is IN, so go ahead and be generous with friends' and colleagues' videos, too! (Of course, only on topics that fit your audience and
business.)
6- Use CTA’s. Yesss, even for your short-form videos! Having a call-to-action is a good idea for almost any piece of content you create, and short, fun, information-rich videos are no different.
7- Try to get consistent with posting shorts on YouTube and elsewhere. The recommendation is approximately 3x
a week. I say do what you can but DO make an effort to get them going and out there right now.
One of the reasons I am suggesting you leverage shorts as a YouTube Strategy
for your channel is that once you get the hang of it, short video gets to be quick and easy to make. The other thing to highlight is the impact of using these kinds of videos in a meaningful, perhaps targeted way for scoring business results is key.
Pro Tip: Plan ahead for the platforms you want to use for sharing videos. It may make sense to pull shorter segments by design from the main video to create alternative file lengths to fit your social channels
uniquely.
TubeBuddy AI to the Rescue
TubeBuddy’s new features cover some of that 7-item list for you, so that’s the good news for today.
First, there’s a new innovative AI title generator. Changing just the title (I know you love it, but seriously, nobody else gets it!) may be surprising, even an awakening to you, but if it refreshes your videos and can give them a lift again, why not? Changing the title ALONE can increase your CTRs or click-through rates.
Next, how about a thumbnail analyzer? What? Yes, get help generating a better thumbnail for your videos from a group of best choices. Plus, they’re rated for you for the best results! And all with the click of a button, thanks to TubeBuddy. Also, in this feature, toggle for heatmaps to see where eyes are concentrating to improve your thumbnail design while you’re there based on what the maps show.
YouTube Studio Rolls Out New Features
YouTube shares more viewer insights! A new card is available on our Audience tab called “Formats your viewers watch on YouTube” from the last 28
days on my YouTube Channel, which had 9.7K views.
So once
again, if you are not already creating shorts, now may be the time. Check out this same card from my daughter Nicole’s “Better Than
Success” channel, which had 16.1K views. Take a look at this feature and see how shorts are performing for you, too!
And other goodies YouTube is rolling out include testing for personalizing or customizing the channel by viewer rather than showing only the same
channel view to all visitors.
On YouTube via your cell devices (Android and iOS),
test expiring community posts by setting expiration dates when posting on your community tab. This seems cool for timely posts, like upcoming event notices that are useless on your feed after the actual date.
And, as always, feel free to hit me up with your questions and feedback.
Until next time, stay beautiful!
