Hidden Secrets of Referral Traffic Revealed [Well Sort of]

Published: Sat, 04/06/13

Hope you're having a great weekend so far.

This week my friend Enstine Muki hit a home run with his guest post on the blog titled:

The post got a lot of love from everyone including the folks at Social Media Examiner, They shared it on Facebook, Google+ and Twitter. This might have something to do with all the extra traffic, +1's, comments and Pins that came in too, so don't miss it!
Speaking of traffic:
Earlier this week I promised that I would have more to say about the new Trackbacks report in Google Analytics. You can find this report under Traffic Sources > Social > Trackbacks.
Here's my Trackbacks Report for March 2013 (click to enlarge or view full image). I wanted to take some time and dive in to see what we could really learn that we didn't already know about the links and traffic coming into our blogs.

I found some good info but the reports could use some tweaks.

Here's the good and the bad of the Trackback reports:
Pros:
We can find some incoming links we didn't know about
We can learn exactly which links send traffic and which one's don't
We can find out about links as they happen

Cons:
We can't sort - so we need to scroll past a lot of zeros before we find a few hits
We can't see every trackback - in fact quite a few of them are missing
We can't export all of the data in a spreadsheet
Take a look at your report and see where all your clicks are coming from. I found that most of my clicks are coming from my other blogs. That's a good thing because it means my strategies are working. After all I can control the number of times I link from one blog to the other, but it's great to know that people are clicking those links and I'm not wasting my time using Blogger blogs.

Even with the downsides of this report, we still have to take the good with the bad and run with it!

Check out your report and if you find something I missed or if you have questions, be sure to let me know.

Happy Blogging!
